Beer Can Chicken


Yes, this recipe is pretty yummy to look at, but shoving a beer can up the cavity of a chicken is simply asking for its fair share of dirty jokes and innuendos, taking the term food porn to the next level.  I started making with my mom as a little girl after watching an episode of “The Next Food Network Star” and it has remained one of my favorite fun takes on chicken.  Lets face it, chicken can get a bit boring after a while but something about smoked paprika, limes and beer steaming it from the inside out turns boring breasts into something a bit more titillating (see what I did there!)

  • 1 whole chicken (about 5-6lbs)
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp. smoked paprika
  • 1 aluminum can of your favorite beer
  • 1 lime
  • Servings: 4-6
  • Difficulty: easy


  • Dry the chicken with paper towels and discard any of the extra goodies that come with it...I'm talking necks, hearts, livers, etc.
  • Place in a large roasting dish, I like to buy a disposable one to make clean up even easier
  • Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl
  • Use a sharp knife to separate the skin above the breast and the actual chicken
  • Place a 1/3 of the dry ingredients under the skin flap
  • Pat the remaining mixture on the chicken, rubbing in
  • Pop open the beer can and pour out (or drink) 1/4 of the beer
  • Place the beer can into the open cavity of the chicken and stand the chicken upright on the can
  • Slice the limes and place on the chicken and in the top dimple of the chicken
  • Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 1 hour 15 minutes, until cooked through
  • Cover with foil and let sit for at least 30 minutes before carving
