Tip Tuesday 02/26/2016: Surviving Starbucks

IMG_8429There is no question that I am a Starbucks and local coffee shop addict!  As much as I try nothing compares to the velvety, caffeine laden warm coffee that comes from a qualified barista.  Even as my years as a barista in college, coffee is always going to be one of those things that is always better when made by someone else.  However, the coffee shop is a diet trap, with buttery croissants, 1,000 calorie iced beverages, and sweet treats it is hard to maintain the concept of health and wellness while trying to get your caffeine fix.  Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks to surviving my daily coffee shop trip.

 

Once you go black….you lose the weight

  • Okay, I know, you hear black coffee and you automatically think bitter.  I recommend trying a lighter roast, like Starbuck’s blonde roast, and add 2 pumps a sugar free mocha and 1 pump of sugar free cinnamon dolce or vanilla for a  rich and indulgent drink that is sure to help satisfy any latte craving.   This same tip is a great way to enjoy the seasonal pumpkin spice and gingerbread flavors, 1-2 pumps is enough to enhance the boring black coffee.  Add a few sprinkles of vanilla powder or cinnamon to an indulgent touch.

Egg and Cheese Me Please

  • Usually under 400 calories, an egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on whole wheat is loaded with protein and is the perfect filling balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fat!  Most coffee shops are using whole eggs which are loaded with vitamin D, choline, and omega 3’s!

Drive it thru…

  • It is so tempting to order a buttery bakery item or sugary cake pop when they are right in front of you, begging to be eaten.  Avoid the temptation and skip the line, order from the drive thru to prevent any last minute ordering that you will later regret!

Bigger is not always better

  • Looking for the caffeine fix, thinking that extra large (or venti) coffee is the way to go?  A larger coffee means more cream or sugar (artificial or real), ultimately equally more calories.  Try ordering a smaller size and adding a shot of espresso for an extra caffeine boost without worrying about the extra pounds.
